School-Based OT

What school-based OT actually looks like

April 2026 · 5 min read

When parents picture school-based occupational therapy, they often picture a small room down the hall - putty, scissors, a handwriting worksheet, twenty minutes, back to class. That model exists, and sometimes it is exactly right. But it is rarely the whole story, and at OT by the Sea we have built something a little different across the schools we partner with on the Westside.

Our therapists embed inside the classroom whenever possible. We sit on the carpet during morning meeting. We watch the transition from math to recess. We observe lunchtime, the unstructured five minutes between subjects, the line at the bathroom, the moment a child has to ask for help and cannot quite find the words. That is where most of the real challenges live - not in the pull-out room.

From those observations we coach the adults in the room. A subtle change to where a child sits. A quiet visual schedule on the corner of the desk. A different pencil grip the teacher can hand out without making a scene. A two-minute movement break before writing. These are the kinds of adjustments that ripple through an entire day and, often, through an entire classroom.

We also screen broadly when schools invite us to. A school-wide handwriting screening, a sensory walk-through of a kindergarten room, an in-service for a faculty before the school year starts - these are some of the most leveraged hours of our week, because they help dozens of children at once.

When direct therapy is the right call, we still keep it tightly connected to the school day. Sessions might happen in the classroom, at the playground, in the cafeteria during lunch, or at a quiet table just outside the room. The goal is always the same: skills that transfer to the place your child actually lives most of their waking hours.

If your school does not currently have OT support, or if your family is supplementing district services with private care, we would love to talk. The best school-based OT does not feel like a separate appointment - it feels like another thoughtful adult in your child's village.
