Did you know that as of 2023, 66% of American households have pets?1 That’s 86.9 million people!
Also, did you know that 24% of American adults are diagnosed with some form of arthritis?2
In honor of National Dog Day (Saturday, August 26, 2023), we wanted to share three important tips with you on how to better care for your body, while you care for your pets!
An occupational therapist's (OT's) primary goal is to help you maximize your independence in these every day tasks that sometimes we take for granted.
When helping someone living with arthritis, OTs can provide tips and tools for safety, activity modifications, and task organization, to make life easier and more enjoyable.
Some easy modifications for individuals living with arthritis to implement during pet care include:
Tip #1: Avoid bending low and lifting.
Instead, use:
- A long handled pooper scooper
- An automated pet feeder
- A litter robot
Tip #2: Avoid exacerbating hand pain.
Instead, use:
- An electric can opener
- A treat dispenser
- A modified leash handles that are easier on the joints
- A scoop for pet food instead of lifting the bag
Tip #3: Avoid overall pain and fatigue.
Instead, use:
- A robot vacuum
- A pet stroller
- Both hands instead of one when completing more strenuous tasks caring for your pet
Lastly, Occupational Therapists can help you create a schedule and plan, to empower you to organize and prioritize the most important parts of your day. This task forecasting and planning will enable you to effectively manage your energy expenditure throughout the day.
On behalf of OT by the Sea and all amazing practitioners around the world, we are here to help YOU cultivate more independence and joy in your life.
Enjoy National Dog Day!
